이번 전시를 기념하여, 보아포는 한국의 전통 한옥 구조에서 영감을 받아 설계된 공간 설치물 안에 신작 회화들을 공개합니다. 이 구조물은 derocheprojects의 글렌 드로슈(Glenn DeRoche)가 디자인한 것으로, 장소 특정적 감각이 돋보입니다. 사유적 분위기를 지닌 이 공간은 관람객을 보아포의 인물화와 마주하는 친밀한 경험으로 초대합니다. 그의 초상화는 내면 성찰과 취약함, 대담한 자기 표현 사이를 오가며, 다양한 삶의 경험이 지닌 깊이와 복합성을 포착하려는 작가의 의지를 분명히 드러냅니다.
The Wooyang Art Museum is delighted to host I Have Been Here Before, Asia’s first institutional solo exhibition of Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo (1984~). One of the most noted Black artists of the contemporary art scene, Boafo has built a style of portraiture based on his personal experiences and inspirations from art history. This exhibition is a sweeping survey of Boafo’s artistic world that rejects presenting Black identity as defined by skin color, choosing instead to be a record and celebration of Black life. It seeks to be an in-depth exploration of Black identity as both something formed within a historical context and an amalgam of complex individual experiences.
I Have Been Here Before is made up of four themed sections, with the final space featuring an architectural installation inspired by the madang (courtyard) of a traditional Korean house, or hanok. The space, which was designed through a collaboration between Boafo and Ghanaian architect Glenn DeRoche, is an intersection of Boafo’s visual language and Korean culture that will facilitate exchanges of experiences, emotions, and ways of thinking.
